Why Evaluations?

As our young ball players grow, develop and change from season to season, annual pre-season evaluations ensure a fair and accurate assessment of the player's skills at that given time. Players of like skill will be placed together on the same team/division in order to enhance player enjoyment and skill development throughout the season.

Evaluation Process

The Southfour/Diamondawgs evaluation process is designed to get a look at all of the key on-field skills. During evaluations, players will rotate through four stations.

Station #1 - Warm up. A dynamic warm up to prepare the athletes physically (no evaluations at this station).
Station #2 - Defense. Evaluators will see players field groundballs, field fly balls and evaluated arm strength.
Station #3 - Pitching. Pitchers will be evaluated on both pitching speed and control.
Station #4 - Hitting. Hitters will be evaluated on their ability to make contact as well as bat speed and power.

It is important to note a few things regarding the evaluation process:

Your daughter (or you!) might be feeling disappointed with their team placement...we understand! But let's use this as an opportunity.

Allow yourself a window of time (typically 24+ hours) for the initial feelings to dissipate.

It is OK to ask for feedback, but keep a couple things in mind:

  • Involve your daughter in the conversation. Ultimately, it is the player that needs to make the adjustment, so hearing some constructive feedback firsthand can be helpful.
  • Don't compare your evaluation or placement to another player in the league. This is a very poor mindset for your daughter to be in as the season approaches.
  • Remember that the evaluations were completed by a group of independent evaluators that have no direct connection to the league.
  • Remember that the evaluation process is NOT perfect and mistakes will certainly be made. This is the nature of all evaluations, but it is also exacerbated by the fact that we are evaluating an outdoor sport while we are indoors during the winter (the unfortunate part of playing ball in Canada).
  • We hope that players view their team placement as a challenge and we hope that players take any feelings of disappointment and funnel them into their development.
  • We look forward to players proving us wrong...and we will be cheering them on and supporting them every step of the way!

Much of what we do during evaluations is projection - this means that we are trying to view the player's skill set and project how it will fare at a particular division.

Our goal is to have a player at a level where they are challenged, but they will also see success. Some for the observable skills that we can project are:

  • bat speed
  • arm strength
  • defensive footwork
  • consistency of mechanics (fielding, hitting, and pitching)

Please let us know if you have any questions. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the field this spring!

If you have questions about the evaluation process or what the evaluation numbers can reveal to your daughter about the key areas they can improve, please contact Miki Kawahara by email: miki@diamondawgs.com.

Please allow a few days for a reply so we can compile key information.
